A Vissim Based Framework for Simulation of Cooperative Ramp Metering

چکیده
Due to the increase of vehicle numbers in recent decades, there exists a significant problem of reoccurring road traffic congestion. Such congestions are a characteristic of densely populated urban areas. They occur daily during the morning and afternoon rush hours. The road traffic congestion problem can be solved by applying new traffic control approaches from the domain of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). One of the applied services from the domain of ITS related to road traffic management is known as ramp metering. It is used to increase the throughput of urban highways with many nearby onand off-ramps. In order to obtain better control results, several nearby on-ramps are combined together into a cooperative control system. Prior to implementation, such cooperative traffic control systems have to be tested in simulations using appropriate traffic data. One of the simulator tools, which can be used for this task, is VISSIM. It enables a microscopic simulation of road traffic and the implementation of various approaches for traffic control. In this paper the VISSIM simulator is used to implement a framework for simulation of cooperative ramp metering between two nearby on-ramps. The implemented framework is tested using traffic demand values characteristic for rush hours.

The Use of Cooperative Approach in Ramp Metering
To ensure higher Level of Service (LoS) at urban motorways, new traffic control concepts are being applied since in most cases there is no available space for infrastructural build-up. For urban motorways, the mostly used control methods are ramp metering combined with additional control methods like variable speed limit control (VSLC). This paper gives a review of the current ramp metering app...

16. Abstract Diamond interchanges and their associated ramps are where the surface street arterial system and the freeway system interface. Historically, these two elements of the system have been operated with little or no coordination between the two. One drawback of operating the ramp-metering system and the diamond interchange system in isolation is that traffic from the ramp, particularly ...

Part I: Modeling, Estimation, and RampMetering Control of Freeway Traffic Themain objective of Part I is to develop improved algorithms for freeway on-ramp metering control. Toward this end, two macroscopic traffic models are first introduced and analyzed. The first is a modification of the cell transmission model (CTM) developed by Daganzo. This modified CTM uses cell vehicle densities as its ...
متن کاملModel predictive control for ramp metering of motorway traffic: A case study
A real-life motorway in Belgium is studied and a comparison is made between a simulation of a morning rush hour situation without control and a simulation of a morning rush hour situation with ramp metering implemented. Two types of controllers are compared: a traditional ALINEA based controller and a model predictive control based ramp metering controller. In order to evaluate the controllers ...
